Is a $400 Resume Worth It? Here’s What I Learned
When your resume isn’t working and you’re out of options, it’s time to call in an expert to turn things around.
Is Paying $400 for a Professional Resume Service Worth It?
Maybe it's more than a resume, but I needed a catchy title. Let's discuss resumes again, specifically using services or software to create or update your resume.
Last week was the final week of my contract. I was confident when the news landed about my contract ending early. Now, the mood is shifting. Who can blame a guy? It's a sh** job marketplace to be in. Naturally, I've already updated my resume and decided to have a free online service review it to see how it faired.
Resume Fail: How Feedback Exposed Critical Issues
The feedback emailed to me said I still needed work. Let me tell you, I was livid. I've put all this research and thought into every piece of this thing. Hearing that the ATS software they ran it through didn't accurately reflect me or my skills. This review made me wonder, "Is this why I've never received an interview since I changed careers?" Okay, I've had a handful, but that's been under ten interviews from a formal job application since I started in 2020.
What I Thought I Fixed on My Resume (Spoiler: It Wasn’t Enough)
I have added a summary. My counselor in boot camp initially told me that a summary was not needed on a resume, but in this latest review, they said I do. Talk about mixed signals.
I beefed up my work history bullet points and ensured they were all in a CAR (cause, action, result) statement.
I tried a new resume format: something simple and nothing overly fancy because I want to get through ATS software.
Speaking of a "beefed up” work history, my article below explains how to format it properly. If you still have questions, leave a comment.
Why I Chose Resumeble: Investing in My Career Instead of Wasting Money
Like any good UXer, I dove headfirst into research, getting completely lost in a rabbit hole of reviews and endless Google searches. The perk of freelancing? I can write off career investments like this—small wins! After all that digging, I landed on trying Resumeble.
Key reasons why I chose Resumeble:
Unlimited revisions. Yes, you heard me. Other contenders varied, but most only allowed two or so.
Direct phone call with the writer: Most offer message communication, but you only sometimes know who is on the other end.
Job guarantee. You heard it right: they guarantee you will find a job within 180 days, or you will get your money back. Most options offer an interview guarantee, but more is needed.

Story update: It’s now December of 2024, and this resume didn’t land me the job. My LinkedIn profile landed me my next job. A recruiter found me, contacted me, and I got the job!
