Not just anyone—someone who understands the struggle.

For me? I call my friend who’s working on his own product and growing his LinkedIn audience. Does he have the magic solution? No. But does talking help me get out of my own head? Absolutely.

2. Write It Down Before Your Brain Implodes

Your brain is a terrible project manager. Get the chaos out of your head and onto paper (or Notion, or a napkin, I don’t judge).

Overwhelm thrives in disorganization. Writing things down forces clarity.

3. Create Content About Your Chaos

People love authenticity more than their Moms. You’re already living the struggle—why not document it?

If you’re feeling isolated, use your content to connect. Whether your audience is 100 people or zero, someone will relate to your journey.

When to Pivot (and When to Burn It All Down and Start Over)

So, you thought you had the perfect strategy, workflow, or niche. Now, you’re second-guessing everything.

How do you know if it’s time to pivot?

Step 1: Figure Out If It’s a Strategy Problem or an Energy Problem

🚫 Strategy Problem?

You’ve been consistent, but your engagement, income, or audience growth is flatlining. You’re losing excitement because nothing is moving.

😵 Energy Problem?

You love what you do, but you’re fried. Even if things are technically working, it’s not fun anymore.

→ What to do: Take a week-long step back. Scale back non-essential tasks and see if you feel better. If you’re still stuck, your strategy—not just your energy—needs a shift.

Step 2: Pinpoint What’s Draining You vs. Energizing You

If you’re overwhelmed, you need to figure out what’s actually draining your momentum.

You can’t get better at something by just consuming information. Your brain needs to engage.

Let me take you back to when I was stuck—stubborn, blind to the signs, and convinced my problems were external. Looking back, I can see how impactful changing my environment was, and I hope my story helps you do the same.

The Change of a Lifetime That I’ll Never Regret

You know that opening scene in a movie that says, “Yup, that was me. Here’s what happened next.”?

Well, take a good look—this is what changing my environment did for me.

But first, let me give you some context.

Big Change #1: Leaving My Hometown Behind

I grew up in Washington, with no clear path in life. At one point, my biggest passion was weed—yes, you heard that right. I dove deep into the medical marijuana industry, became obsessed with plant genetics, cannabinoids, and terpenes, and for a while, I thought that was my future.

But years passed, and I wasn’t going anywhere. I managed a retail store, got robbed, and dealt with constant break-ins. Eventually, I left for a job at Amazon delivering packages.

That job humbled me. I will never disrespect a delivery driver again after learning how brutally exhausting it is.

Yet, I was still stuck. Another dead-end job. My knees were giving out from rushing deliveries. I knew I had to make a change.

A friend convinced me to move to Arizona. So, I did—dragging my girlfriend and my dog, Buster, along with me.

And that’s when everything started shifting.

Big Change #2: Leaving a Toxic Relationship Behind

In Arizona, my friend gave us a place to live in the first house he bought.

We got kicked out because he couldn’t stand the girl I was with.

I don’t blame him.

We moved into an apartment together, and that’s when things got dark. I gained weight, lost motivation, and barely recognized myself in the mirror. I hit rock bottom.

And then, I started seeing in myself the same toxic traits I had resented in my father when I was a child.

If we had never moved to Arizona, we wouldn’t have been tested to this extent. That environment forced us to confront the cracks in our relationship.

And when the moment came, I left.

I moved back into my friend’s house, and it became the most positive environment I had ever lived in.

Big Change #3: A New Environment Leads to New Growth

Sometimes, you have to cut everyone out and start over.

In Arizona, it was just me, my dog, my friend, and my parents. That was my entire circle.

And that was all I needed.

My friend was a UI/UX designer. He had moved to Arizona, built a career, and even bought a house—all things I never imagined possible for myself.

Living with him changed me.

I had no chains holding me back. I started dating for the first time in my life. I started learning new skills. And I actually cared about my health and appearance for the first time.

That’s when I decided to make the biggest shift of my life—leaving customer service behind and diving headfirst into design.

And here’s what I learned:

When you start noticing small wins, motivation kicks in. I quit my last customer service job at Amazon and went all in on design.

I became relentless.

That stubbornness turned into persistence. Persistence became consistency. And consistency is what turns wild dreams into reality.

How to Change Your Environment and Unlock the New You

Ask yourself this:

• What pisses you off about your life?

• What brings you pleasure?

• What’s keeping you stuck in the hamster wheel?

If you don’t feel like you’ve hit rock bottom, dig deeper. Get brutally honest with yourself.

I sucked at recognizing those critical points in myself, but I found it easier to see them in others. So, let me help you find your catalyst.

3 Steps to Changing Your Life

Step #1: Identify the Cycle You’re Stuck In

Are you in a revolving loop? These are the three biggest blockers I see in most people:

• Toxic relationships – Are your closest connections draining you?

• Your career – Do you hate your job but drag yourself through it every day?

• Your location – Are you stuck in a city or town that keeps you small?

Figure out what’s actually holding you back.

Step #2: Start Making Small Shifts

If you can’t make a big move yet, do this:

• Change your surroundings. If your home environment is terrible, start spending more time outside. Work from a café in a place where people look successful.

• Find new people. Drop toxic friends who don’t support your growth. Your circle should reflect where you want to be.

• Rethink your career. Update your resume, improve your portfolio, and start networking. The right connections change everything.

Step #3: Surround Yourself With People Who Live the Life You Want

• Hit the gym. Prioritize your health.

• Find mentors and role models.

• Strip out anyone who doesn’t support your growth.

• Allow yourself time. Real change doesn’t happen overnight.

And most importantly—stay consistent. The discomfort will be worth it.

Disappear and Become Unrecognizable

Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

When I decided to transition from customer service to UI/UX design, I wrote one goal on my wall:

$80,000.

That’s not the healthiest goal—I’ve since learned that enjoying the process is more important—but at the time, I had never experienced financial security in my life.

• The million dollar question: Can people get the work done at the same level—or better—than they do in office?

• Does this save or cost us money? On paper, we could cut costs. But is that just shifting the expenses (home office stipends, new software, IT security)?

Minimizing and shrugging off bad habits can feel effortless when you’re stuck in a loop, so I follow one of the three tips I found from observing my (good and bad) patterns.

Can Remote Work Cause Depression?

Maybe you have a trophy on your wall for your lone wolf talent. If you're a professional homebody like me, you know how easy it is to stay home seven days a week. Sure, isolation may lead to depression, but depression is more complex than if you’re lonely or not.

Lucky for us, remote workers have perks that others don’t to beat your homebody lifestyle into submission if it goes too far! 🥷 It’s okay to admit that you want something more for yourself. For example, it can be hard for me to admit, but I know when I go out in public after being at home for a few days, I realize that I feel kinda good. Maybe it’s because I saw a cute girl, but does it really matter?

We’ll discuss those remote work perks that can be utilized later, but first, let’s start with the basics to understand how loneliness, depression, and remote work may be connected.

Signs of Depression

If you search online, this list can be as long as a ten-year-old Christmas list, but I noticed these few things that you may also:

• Appetite Changes: Are you eating an entire pizza, KitKat, and more? Be mindful of significant weight loss or gain due to eating habits.

• Social Withdrawal: Have you decided to stay home permanently? Avoiding social interactions, even with close friends and family.

• Persistent Sadness or Hopelessness – Feeling down most of the time for no apparent reason, no longer enjoying the things you used to enjoy.

• And more!

Long story short, depression sucks, and it’s easy to minimize, thinking it’s just normal. Look for a spike in these signs. More importantly, get help or talk to someone if needed. Depression is complex. I’m not a doctor, but I do know about the connection between loneliness and depression.

Loneliness is Not the Sole Cause of Depression

Remember the 5000-calorie food coma knockout punch? Well, loneliness can feel the same, so don’t let it go into a full-blown depressive state.

When depression hit me like a brick shithouse, I didn’t care how much I was eating, spending on Doordash, avoiding the gym (and I love weightlifting), and sometimes I loved being alone more than I loved myself.

If every day feels like a 5000-calorie coma, distinguish what’s gotten you there. Start journaling once a day so you are observant of those patterns. It’s incredible what you will find when you reflect on each day.

I’m about to drop a golden nugget here. Guess what? Being lonely as a remote worker wasn’t the sole cause of any of the disgusting activities that I mentioned above.

Overcoming Loneliness While Working Remote

Have you ever thought how stupid you were after finding the solution to something and what the solution was so simple that you kinda hated yourself for not taking action sooner? My solutions to overcome being lonely at home all day may feel cliche, but they worked for me as a work-from-home designer:

• Leave the House: Leave the house for a few hours. Don’t complicate it. Get out and work somewhere. Try working at a suitable coffee shop. Order something, chat with the person at the register, find somewhere comfy to plop, put on some noise-canceling headphones, and get to work. Being around people helps you stay more content and avoid bad habits at home.

• Schedule Weekly Visits: Do you see friends or family at least once a week? It only takes one person. What works is having one solid friend who has interests similar to yours. Work together for a day. It’s not hard, and having a friend on a similar path can be motivating as hell.

• Stop Trying to Do More: Your brain gives you clues if it’s overwhelmed. For example, if you’re eating a 5000-calorie meal and writhing in pain afterward. That is a sign is your brain is trying to cope (healthy or not), so that is your queue to take a damn break and do less. Stop trying to be a multi-tasking machine and overthinking your entire life. Focus on one big thing a day (it’s only temporary). Simplifying will soothe your mind and give it the space to breathe, priming it for a bit of recharge to get you back on track.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned (and keep learning) is this: People won’t always interpret your words the way you do. What feels like a joke to you might feel like daggers to them.

1. Ignore the tension and hope it blows over (spoiler: it rarely does).

2. Take the awkward but mature route and clear the air.

Here’s what I’ve found works best: Get on a quick call as soon as you can—or, even scarier, talk in person. Don’t wait. Waiting just gives the awkwardness time to fester and grow into something worse. Trust me when I say that conversational skills require practice. How to Undo a Slack Slip-Up

1. Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself: Before firing off a message, pause. If there’s any chance it could be misread, reword it. Slack strips away tone, so what’s funny in your head might read as passive-aggressive or worse.

2. If It Lands Wrong, Own It Fast – If you sense tension or get that dreaded “…” typing indicator but no response, don’t double down—clarify. A quick “Hey, I meant that as a joke—hope it didn’t come across wrong” can save a lot of stress (for both of you).

3. Face the Awkwardness Like an Adult – If you really stepped in it, don’t hide behind Slack. A direct message can clear things up, but nothing beats a quick face-to-face (or call). Yes, it’s uncomfortable. Yes, you might cringe. But walking away with your working relationships intact? Worth it.

This might sound obvious, but it’s crucial to find a way to make your work enjoyable. Would you rather run a mile every day or take a 30-minute walk? (Spoiler: You already know which one you’ll stick with.)

Give Yourself Permission to Pivot

Success isn’t a straight line. Don't be afraid to adjust as you figure out what works, what doesn’t, or even what you hate doing. You’re your own worst critic, but don’t let perfectionism block your path to sustainable success.

And if that doesn’t sting, here’s the kicker: an Indeed report found that only 17.6% of job postings in October even asked for a bachelor’s degree.

So, while a college degree squeaks the door open, it isn’t guaranteeing a seat at the table anymore.

Switching up tasks can really screw with my ADD, but that’s startups for ya. Right?

Reflecting on My Design Journey in a Startup

I still remember what my boss said during one of my first interviews: “I just need someone that can come in here and run design.” The pressure was immediate, and imposter syndrome slowly crept into my head. I asked myself, “Can I do this?”

Looking back, I’ve come a long way. Early on, I was hesitant to make significant design changes, clinging to the old app’s structure. I spent too much time on personas and research, which was useful but not what we needed to tackle our main goal: reducing churn.

Now, I’ve learned to balance action with planning. I’ll sketch a quick flow to clarify a complex project, then dive into designing. With every project requiring desktop and mobile designs, I stay flexible, pivoting when discovery or business priorities shift.

It was moving to a new state, gritting my teeth through a job that pissed me off, and trying to fix a crumbling relationship. These painful weights on my life were the catalyst that led me to take a leap of faith with my career that all started with writing the goal of “$80k” on a piece of paper and tacking it to my bedroom wall.

You and your world can change if you make it so. I’m on my soapbox to tell you that a career change without a degree is possible if you’re willing to bet on yourself and commit to learning through blood, sweat, and tears.

These are the steps I took to land my dream career, and I want you to follow them for your career change journey—without the fancy education.

From $15/Hour to $80K: Breaking Free From a Job You Hate

Over a decade in customer service, with no career goals or passions. Earning under $15/hr, unable to afford to live on my own, and stuck in a toxic environment. It’s not a good spot to be in, and yet, it’s a reality for millions of people in this world.

At what point do you tell yourself that it’s time for change? Being overwhelmed, undervalued, and having all your job baggage bleed into your personal life should be a red flag. Sadly, personal struggles, depression, and getting lost in the constant spiral of stagnant growth become the normal cycle. It’s easy to get lost in your own dark abyss of life.

The Steps I Took to Break Into UI/UX Design Without a College Degree

As I reflect on where it all began, I took three main steps when transitioning into my dream UI/UX design career, so let me tell you a quick story.

Step 1: Recognizing It Was Time for Change

It hit me like a brick wall. I was to the point of loudly cussing at my computer screen as I received back-to-back calls (and emails) while working at Amazon. I’ve never felt more like a useless cog in a giant machine than I did in that position.

Moving to Arizona was a nice change of pace, but I had to do one last thing. Leave behind this four-year relationship that added to my stress and anguish, and after we moved into our place in Arizona, we split up.

What do you do after you stop banging your head against a wall for four years? You leave your job soon after, and with no backup plan other than I knew I was learning about UI/UX design, and it had to work.

Sometimes, the first step isn’t learning a new skill–it’s leaving behind what no longer serves you. You may not even realize what your catalyst is until you have passed it, but recognize the weight holding you down and leave it behind.

Step 2: Discovering UI/UX Design

I started scrappy. Coursera was the perfect start, so I started learning little by little to understand design, which led me to something profound.

I had never experienced this in my life, and for the first time, I enjoyed learning. It was the perfect storm of my environment and situation, the catalyst for breaking off a relationship, moving back in with my friends, and having a positive living environment.

Start small–explore a new field with free or low-cost tools before committing to a formal program. Some of you may not need structure, but having a course that I could do on my own time worked for my current situation.

Step 3: Investing in Myself Through Bootcamps and Mentorship

I was pretty broke and unsure about boot camps, so I did the most logical thing as a man at the age of 30: I begged my family to split tuition for CareerFoundry with me. Don’t be ashamed of not having money and calling in favors, but if you do, follow through with your promises.

A well-chosen boot camp, thorough course, community, and real-world experience can fast-track your career–even without a degree. Think to yourself about the best way to learn, and run with it!

How I Landed My First Paid UI/UX Design Job and Built a Freelance Career

Completing a boot camp isn’t going to deliver you a career in design magically. Remember when I said to commit to learning through blood, sweat, and tears? You need to keep the snowball rolling downhill until you crash into your dream career. Doing this is how I kept moving my snowball into a freelance UI/UX career, and you can do it, too.

Practical Experience

Be Batman if you have to, and shadow experienced peers and mentors. My early mentor let me sit on user research calls, made me find brand assets, and showed me foundational real-world UX design skills.

Volunteering through UX Rescue and Design for America (DFA) led to some of my best portfolio pieces, and I met some killer designers along the way who motivated me to be better. Take all of the practical experience and add it to your experience and skills section on LinkedIn and your resume, and create case studies for your design portfolio.

Your LinkedIn and resume may not say that you worked at Google or have unrelated previous experience, but you just made a powerful change and a seismic shift that will change everything for you going forward.

Your portfolio doesn’t need to be perfect, but it must show your problem-solving design process. Your work is going to suck for a while, but it’s only temporary. Check out one of my early projects (try not to laugh).

Early Mistakes and Lessons Learned

You will make mistakes and not even realize it in the beginning, but you have to keep going. Avoid this at all costs, relying on one person or network instead of actively building connections widely. People will tell you that work is coming; don’t wait for that work to appear. If you want to survive, networking should begin on day one of your journey and should never stop.

Create your own brand as a designer and put your stamp on the world wherever you are active online. You don’t have to be an expert to start posting online and connecting with others. You can be the explorer who shares your experiences and shows how much you learn by adding your spin on things.

New designers always need help positioning themselves, and there are no early-stage jobs. That is why you need to network the minute you decide to change your career, and you can do it all from your computer sitting at home. Refine your story to position yourself effectively. Small Wins Lead to Big Breaks

From $15/hr in customer service to $30/hr landing my first UI/UX design contract, where did the work come from? One of my mentors that I met along my journey. In fact, all of my early paid contracts came from my small network of mentors. Your network is your net worth.

My big break came almost a year after my initial paid contract. A new contract landed in my lap when I needed it the most, and it was for $40/hr. Do you remember that goal I wrote on my wall? $40/hr is roughly $83k a year. You may start to see a pattern, but this role came from someone in my network again.

One of the most impactful ways to create a plan is to set a huge goal and organize everything you do in your daily life around that goal. Freelancing wasn’t my choice, but it was the only work I could find starting, so take whatever you can get and be a sponge learning everything you can. You will build a reputation with your work, online brand presence, and networking.

Let’s look at the exact steps needed to transition your career into UI/UX design.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Transitioning Into UX Design Without a Degree

Step 1: Identify and Build Transferable Skills

• Audit your current strengths and skills. These can be soft skills, technical skills, or strengths that you may excel at somewhere else in life. Maybe that’s something you’re passionate about!

  • Pro Tip: Ask a close friend or family member if you need help identifying your strengths and skills.

• Start mapping your list of strengths and skills to different UI, UX, or product design skills, such as empathy, user research, visual design, or business strategy.

  • Pro Tip: You may be surprised by the number of things a designer can specialize in, so research different roles or look up job descriptions if you need help finding in-demand skills.

Step 2: Explore and Validate Your Interest in Design

• Start somewhere, anywhere! It doesn’t matter where. If you are a visual learner, YouTube is a fabulous place to start, but if you need some structure, then places like Coursera or Skillshare may have free options or are relatively affordable.

  • Pro Tip: If you enjoy the introductory content, look for affordable courses or programs that offer certificates that you can post on LinkedIn to build up your profile.

Step 3: Invest in Education and Mentorship

• Now that you know you want this career. Networking and finding mentors are the best places to start. Pick topics you need to learn the most and ask them to meet with you to discuss them. Keep your relationships over time and ask for feedback on your resume, LinkedIn profile, and portfolio. It’s the only way you’re going to improve.

  • Pro Tip: ADPList is the best place to find design mentors for free.

• You don’t need to join a UI/UX or related boot camp, but it worked for me. There are many boot camps out there, so pick one that aligns with the skills you want to learn, is affordable, offers mentors, and offers a career guarantee or something similar.

  • Pro Tip: If you really want, you can start redesigning your favorite websites and apps or ask the people you meet online to let you work for free to build real-world experience. Finding others to do group work may be difficult until you get to know people, but it’s more affordable.

Step 4: Build a Beginner Portfolio

• Start with something minimal and manageable. If this is your first portfolio, please just use a template. It will get your website up faster, and that is the most important part. Get it live, and then improve it.

  • Pro Tip: I have used sites like Framer, UXfolio, and Webflow, but there are many other easy solutions. UXfolio has the easiest learning curve to start with, but it may be limited.

• Start documenting your thought process and outcomes in your case studies each time you do a project. It’s as easy as starting a note on Google Docs on your computer. Your storytelling is going to sell you and your process to potential recruiters.

  • Pro Tip: Your initial projects aren’t going to be paid projects, and that is okay! Start with volunteer work, redesign challenges, and mock projects. Don’t worry about perfection this early on; it will eat you alive.

Step 5: Network and Seek Opportunities

• Capitalize on LinkedIn and ensure your profile tells people that you are a designer and what your superpowers are within design. Use LinkedIn to connect with other designers, find communities, and, most importantly, post your journey and start sharing content!

  • Pro Tip: Creating your brand and presence as a new designer is essential with the level of competition out there. Consistent content creation will get your name in people's faces.

  • Resource: Do you want to build a freelance career? In an early YouTube video, I gave a wealth of information on creating a brand that can win clients.

• As you reach out, try to find free events or cohorts you can participate in, such as free design cohorts where you learn specific skills, Hackathons, which are great for new and experienced designers, and more.

  • Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to find local groups for designers. Try using the Meetup app to find one near you.

  • Resource: I found this resource on LinkedIn. Check out Designer Slack Communities, a list of Slack communities you can join as you network.

Step 6: Refine Your Job-Hunting Strategy

• Apply for all jobs. Whether they’re full-time, contract, or require education or skills that may be just outside of your bubble. Networking will be your primary driver in landing early jobs, and job applications will be your second.

  • Pro Tip: Applying for jobs can be disheartening at times, but keep going, keep improving your techniques, and make sure you tailor your resume or cover letter a little bit each time to target the job description and pass the ATS software used by hiring teams.

• Feedback is a vital skill, and this is your reminder to consistently go out and ask your network for feedback on your resume, portfolio, LinkedIn profile, and career-hunting strategies. These assets are the three things needed to carry you to the finish line, and just like design, they also use an iterative process, and as you learn, they need to improve with you.

  • Pro Tip: Creating your brand and presence as a new designer is essential with the level of competition out there. Consistent content creation will get your name in people's faces.

  • Resource: Do you want to build a freelance career? In one of my YouTube videos, I gave ten reasons why being a freelance is the ultimate upgrade.

• Reflect on which part of job-hunting you are getting stuck on, and focus on that area if you need help. For example, you need to improve your interview skills if you are landing interviews but still need to get the job.

  • Pro Tip: Practice your communication and negotiation skills. They will build your confidence and be powerful tools when you become a designer—opening up opportunities for more money, work, and so on.

Why It’s Never Too Late to Start Your UI/UX Design Career

There is only one thing holding you back, and that is yourself. Don’t force yourself to stay in something miserable because you think that is just the usual way of life. If I could go from making $15/hr or less all my life and no degree to $45/hr+ in less time than getting a bachelor's degree, you can too!

You will only get to your dream career by setting a massive goal and working backward, breaking it into small, easily attainable chunks. Attaining a gigantic goal is a huge undertaking and will take resilience (I prefer to call myself stubborn) and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. Use those painful objects in life weighing you down as your catalysts of change.

In 2020, I moved to Arizona, stuck in a crumbling relationship and a job I despised. Exhausted and desperate for change, I wrote a bold financial goal on my wall: $80k.

Two years later, I landed my first design contract, and soon after, I surpassed my goal of earning $80k in a career I love, all without a college degree. My journey from a customer service job to a successful UI/UX career path is a testament to the power of determination and stubbornness.

Here's how I turned my vision into reality and navigated a designer career change.

Pivoting from a life that didn't suit me anymore

I knew that if I didn't act, I'd be stuck in a cycle of misery.

At what point do you leave a job behind that you hate and start something new?

I used to hate my job and become infuriated daily, grumbling and gritting my teeth with each phone call. People treated me like garbage over the phone, and my coworkers would cry about their calls, and I had to get out.

That was my final customer service job. I worked in customer service from 18 to 30 and had enough.

I believed that we have to do things we don't enjoy, and that's just how life is. Well, news flash, it's time to throw that thinking into the garbage, light it on fire, and walk away.

A series of events became the catalyst for my transformation

It was one thing, but a series of events led to me changing careers and leaving behind jobs that I never made over $15/hr.

Life is hard out there.

Let's go over the series of events that triggered my turning point:

1. I decided to quit the job I hated, kissing Amazon goodbye without a job to move into.

2. Finally, I came to terms with the fact that I couldn't fix a relationship, and we closed a chapter that should have been closed a year prior. This was the most freeing event that happened to me, and I noticed that you are the one you surround yourself with.

3. The new environment and sunshine led to growth. Leaving the gloomy weather of the Pacific Northwest had its benefits, and I suggest everyone try living somewhere new.

4. Being free from the negative energy of my job and relationship dramatically improved my mental health. Giving me the motivation to improve myself mentally and physically.

Discovering UI/UX Design: A Career Change That Worked

I started feeling a new rush and self-learning a new career path, UI/UX design. This was the beginning of my journey into the world of UX design and UI design, which would eventually lead me to freelance opportunities and a thriving career.

For the first time in my life, I didn't hate learning. I had to force myself through school because it's just something you have to do. I always struggled, let alone find anything I enjoyed to learn.

How I Landed My First UX Design Job

After dipping my toes in through various Coursera design courses, my friend pushed me off the cliff.

I researched the best design bootcamp, found CareerFoundry, and, after scrounging for the money, pulled the trigger. This decision marked the beginning of my formal education in UX design and set me on the path to building a solid portfolio.

The Road Was Arduous

The title of this story may sound glamorous, but the journey was anything but easy. I bet everything on this career, spending most of my savings and taking on free work just to gain experience. For months, I struggled to build momentum.

The support of my friend and mentor was vital. Shadowing and working for free gave me invaluable hands-on experience, which I included on my resume. Along with internships and volunteer work, these opportunities became the cornerstone of my portfolio and prepared me for future design challenges.

Early Mistakes and Hard Lessons

Eventually, one thing led to another, and I began to make connections. However, I realized I wasn’t moving fast enough. My first big mistake? Relying too heavily on others instead of taking charge of my own progress.

My second mistake was not networking beyond my immediate circle. If I could go back, I would start building relationships outside my friend group on day one of boot camp. Networking, I learned, is critical for uncovering freelance opportunities and entry-level positions in UX design.

Slow Progress and Small Wins

Progress was painfully slow at first. However, opportunities began to appear as I sought out free work, participated in group classes, and consistently engaged with people in the field. For example, a paid contract from a mentor helped me scrape by and pay rent while I kept pushing forward.

Momentum at Last

Finally, things started to snowball—though it felt like forever before that happened. Paid freelance projects trickled in, and I slowly rebuilt my savings.

The Toughest Challenge of My Career

I’ve never faced anything more challenging in my career. Breaking into UX design required relentless learning, problem-solving, and refining my communication skills to succeed in a highly competitive field. But every hurdle taught me something valuable and brought me closer to where I am today.

Turning Career Challenges into a Passion for Design

Fumbling through the dark when hordes of boot camp students were getting certified, just as people were being laid off, created one hell of a journey.

This is how I found my passion. To help other people going through the same sh*t storm, I went through to land their dream career. I realized the importance of design communities and how they can support individuals making a career change without prior experience.

My first UI/UX contract paid me $30/hr. That was double what I was making when I hated my life answering phones for Amazon.

The next colossal leap after my $30/hr contract was $40/hr.

These freelance opportunities added to my portfolio, where my love for strategy started to show itself in various case studies through the design challenges I had overcome.

Here is a high-level timeline of events

1. I moved to Arizona in April of 2020

3. Soon after, I made it to my goal of reaching $80k and landed my next design contract that had me earning $83,000 🎉🥂

A complete transformation took place in my life. This happened with no college degree and a customer service background. I had successfully navigated the UI/UX career path and established myself as a freelance designer.

Making a significant career change can be challenging, especially now. But if you are serious, willing to put in the time and effort, and possibly a bit stubborn like me, then leap!

The field of UX design still offers numerous opportunities for those willing to invest in building skills and applying their transferable past experiences, regardless of their background.

Value-packed lessons from transitioning careers into UI/UX design

When doubling your income, there is much to unpack, but let's go through some of the most pivotal lessons.

What Worked

• Mentorship had the most impact in doubling my income. My mentors taught me skills, connected me to work, and helped me network with others.

• A structured boot camp course helped me build a solid foundation but never landed me a job. Don’t expect a boot camp to lead you to a job magically.

• Work with others. I participated in volunteer projects, cohorts, and Slack channels. Seeing others' work, especially designers', showed me what I could improve on and motivated me to achieve more.

Valuable Skills I Learned Outside Design

• Career hunting strategy: I have become an expert in optimizing LinkedIn, improving resumes, creating a portfolio, and adopting a more confident mindset when applying for work. 🧠

• Confidence: It may sound silly, but confidence is worth its weight in gold. All of this practice has helped me talk to recruiters, defend my decisions without getting butthurt about feedback, helped me talk to women, and a lot more. Do hard sh*t! 💪

• Work-life balance and time management: You should not be punished for being more efficient. If I can get what I need done on one project for the day, I can work on another. Possibly a passion project. Can you say #sidehustle? 💰

Conquering Inner Doubts

• "But I don't have a degree." Yes, a college degree can give you a significant boost, but if you pick a career that doesn't necessarily require a formal education, go for it!

• "There are no entry-level jobs." There weren't for me either, but I made some through my mentors and added that to my professional experience. Don't lie on your resume. Start a project with a group, join a volunteer real-world project, or ask your mentor to let you shadow and intern with them for free.

• "I don't know how to position myself." The good news is that this will change a million times throughout your career. Dig into who you are, what you're skilled in, and what you enjoy, and look up job descriptions. Start mapping it all together and create an elevator pitch. I'm happy to help.

Truthfully, I could list many more concerns because I had to fight many demons to get here. Let me know if you have anything weighing you down.

Tuition ranges from $40k to $200k for a bachelor's degree, and that doesn't include books and additional costs. My $5k path saved me over $100k.
